Open-source software

As an internet company, Netcreators makes use of open-source software as much as possible. For assignments we just use open-source software. What is open-source exactly?

Open-source software is software of which the source code is free to use, made available by the creators of the software. OSS origins on initiative of a few programmers and develops from that point through worldwide cooperation of programmers and developers through the internet. The initiator mostly coordinates the progress. The software itself does not belong to a specific owner and is therefor free for use. The most known example is Linux, a Unix-like operating system. The content management system we use, TYPO3 is also open-source.
